Origin EON 17-S

Origin EON 17-S: Power with a Price Tag

The Origin EON 17-S is no ordinary machine; in fact this isn’t even a machine. It’s a monster. Origin’s new EON 17-S is a hard-core gamer’s fantasy come true.

Hardware Specifications

This monster is packed with Intel’s best CPU, the Core i7-4940 Extreme Edition, and Nvidia’s insanely powerful 8Gb GeForce GTX 880M. If that wasn’t enough it also has 16Gb of Corsair Vengeance DDR3/1600 memory, a 750 Gb hard drive at 7200 RPM, and two 120 Gb SSDs. With a 17.3 inch LCD, Origin’s EON 17-S weighs a staggering 4.9 kg, and is nearly 2 inches thick. It has every I/O port a gamer could ask for. There is an HDMI port, a gigabit Ethernet port, mini display port, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, a memory card reader, and four audio jacks (headphone, mic, digital audio out, and analog audio out). It also comes with built in Onkyo speakers in a raised speaker bar.

Design and Looks

I hate to say it, but this heavy bugger had a very plastic feel to its chassis, and especially to its lid. The makers of the chassis, Clevo, should focus more on the body, and try to make it sturdier. I felt that if accidentally knocked off the table with the lid open, the sheer weight of the machine would definitely snap the LCD off.  Maybe Clevo should borrow some of the magnesium and aluminium based alloys from Dell to make the body sturdier. But other than that, the trackpad and the backlit keyboard were excellent. They provide a very smooth texture, which feels awesome under the fingertips.

Performance and Battery

The Origin EON 17-S is sheer genius. I played Grid 2, BioShock, and Call of Duty: Ghosts, without a speck of lag or even pixilation. The display apart, once you plug in a pair of headphones get ready to be transported to another world. Whilst playing Grid 2, the sound of the roaring engine, and the drifting sounds makes you feel the G-forces on your seat.

A lot of you might have guessed it right, but the Origin EON 17-S, only provides a battery backup of 2.5 hours. The AC charger itself weighs 1kg, forget the battery. I wouldn’t recommend buying an extra battery for this machine, as you would just be lugging extra weight.

The Origin EON 17-S is an excellent buy, and how much will it set you back buy? I’ll give you a moment to get yourself a glass of water….ready? Ok here it is then. $3,500. That’s about Rs.2.1 lakh for this mean machine. For all the gamers out there, this machine is simply power with a price tag.
